Year after year, the Cartagena International Music Festival invites its audience to tour some of the main milestones in the history of music.
For its fourteenth edition, from January 4-12, 2020 in Cartagena de Indias, Bolivar, the Festival will focus on exploring the transition from classical language to early romanticism in Vienna. All this under a theme he has titled, "The beautiful and the sublime".
In this case, "the beautiful", as an aesthetic category for interpreting classicism, arises from the perfection of forms, their harmony and balance. Otherwise, "the sublime", as one of the keys to understanding the first romanticism, alludes to the human feeling of consternation and amazement at the grandiose and infinite.
In this historical and aesthetic journey, the music of Franz Schubert will be the common thread from classical to romantic style. In particular, five of the Viennese master's nine symphonies will be presented, along with chamber works and various lieder cycles (songs) that reflect the emergence of romantic sensibility.
At the same time, works by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven will be presented, which were a source of inspiration for Schubert in his first phase of artistic production and which will contribute, precisely, to exposing the main musical elements that characterize the transition from classical to romantic language in Vienna, between 1782 and 1830.
The programme will consist of 34 concerts, an opera recital, multiple conversations, exhibitions, master classes, luthier's workshops and numerous activities surrounding music and musical instruments.
As is tradition, guest performers are recognized for their specialty or innovation around the chosen repertoire. Before its start in September 2019, the Festival will announce the list of artists.
